The Name Game: Holi

Starting with one of the most interesting fact of Holi, unlike other festivals the name of this festival has been derived from the name of an evil woman “Holika”. The woman hatched up with her brother Hiranyakashyap to kill his own son a devotee if the Hindu deity Vishnu named Prahlad (his own nephew) by burning him but gets herself burn to ashes in the end; this is just the crux of the real story which involves a lot of other magical stuffs.

To recreate the cremation of Holika and enjoy the win of Prahlad, Indians set up bon fire evening/night before Holi which is famous as “Holika Dahan” (Devoting Holika to fire).

Apart from this there are many other facts of this festival, like it was referred as great cupid festival in 7th century, another fact of holi is the use of color which is supposed to represent the love between Hindu deity Krishna and his companion Radha (Famous as Radha-Krishna, Krishna smeared color on Radha’s face as he was spiteful of her fair complexion, making the color eternal to this festival), in West bengal it is celebrated as Dolyatra. There are many other facts related to this festival and historical importance, but in modern days the festival celebration has reached new pinnacles.

Bhaang, an amazing refreshing desi drink made in milk with dry fruits and flavors and not to mention marijuana extract is famous on holi, people gets immersed in the celebration forgetting all the sorrow and sadness. Holi is rather a very easy pocket celebration as anyone with gulal, water balloon, water, even snow celebrates this festival.

Because of such huge crowd gathering popularity of this festival, the day is declared as a national holiday.  Holi is also considered as a mark of positiveness and belief in almighty wih good always sidelining evil demons. With the same belief we wish you a very happy holi-day.
